Slot Machine Increases Get Support

It looks as though Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has gotten some powerful support in the Senate, as two of its members are behind his slot machine compacts that he has signed. Last fall the governor had signed slot machine compacts with several tribes that would increase the number of slot machines that they were allowed to have. This angered the legislature as they felt that it was simply a ruse to have the tribes put their money behind his re-election instead of those in the legislature.

They said that they did not have enough time to inspect the bills before they were handed them, which was at the end of their session. The governor wanted them to push them through, but the legislature refused, and thus they are now in the laps of the new legislature to be handled.

However, the governor now has two Senators looking to put their weight behind the bills – Senate Leader Don Perata, a Democrat, said that he will be the author of the slot machine compact for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. He also said that Senator Denise Ducheny, also a Democrat, would be the author of the slot machine compact for the Morongo Band.

Assemblyman Charles Calderon, a Democrat, would be authoring the bill for the Morongo slot machine compact, which would assist the other two compacts in bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars for the state of California. The revised compacts will be written and then sent up for approval.
