Slot Machine Glitch Pays Less

Marian Jaramillo was playing the “Triple Hot Zesty Peppers” slot machine at the Santa Ana Star Casino when she hit the jackpot for $28,000. However, it turned out that there was some sort of a glitch with the slot machine, and casino officials told her that she had not won and they offered her $2,000.

Jaramillo, who owns and runs Marian’s Day Care, rejected the casino’s offer, and the next day they came back with another offer of $2,800. She rejected that offer as well. Jaramillo told them that she thought the slot machine had malfunctioned, but she did not feel that she had to pay just because the casino had problems.

She told the casino that she would settle for half of the $28,000 and casinos officials agreed. The casino’s General Manager said that he could not comment on what had transpired, as there was a confidentiality agreement. But he did say that the casino is committed to solving customers’ disputes fairly.

He went on to say that he had been in the casino industry for more than 17 years, and during that time he had only seen three slot machine malfunctions. But he said that this was not the only recent malfunction that had happened to the slot machines lately. He said that in August a slot machine that had a maximum payout of $2,500 registered a $1.5 million jackpot – and the slot machine player settled for a lot less. He actually took $385 and two dinners at the casino’s steakhouse.
