Problem Gambling on the Rise

The National Council on Problem Gambling announced that they have seen an increase in the number of people who call them for assistance – in fact, they have seen an increase of at least 10% every year for the past decade. They say that the increase in Internet gambling, as well as the number of slot machines and casinos that are now legal in the US has added to those calls.

They say that the increase in the games of chance in every state except for Utah and Hawaii has added other groups not normally seen in their figures. They have college students, the elderly, and women – who are all part of the gambling addiction equation. In fact, it is far more likely that a woman will be addicted to the slot machines or gambling than a man, as the current trend shows women becoming addicted to them over a course of six months – as opposed to men who usually develop it over a period of years.

They say that if you suspect that someone you know may have a slot machine or gambling problem, you must confront them. Do some research and find out the warning signs and then confront that person with your suspicions. If they are a college student, then see if they are taking up an interest in poker nights or online gaming that did not seem to be there before. With seniors it will more likely be hitting a bingo parlor over and over for the thrill of playing.

Even if they deny they have a problem, you should still confront them – even if it is just to tell them that they can always come to you if they discover they are in trouble. Because most people don’t know when someone is addicted, they have the feeling that they are all alone in it – so it is good to let them know that you are there for them whenever they are ready.
