Denbo Votes for Slot Machines

State Rep. Jerry Denbo chose to vote for the slot machines at Indiana’s horse racing tracks, although many others think that it is a bad idea. He said that the slot machines at the tracks will not have a negative effect on the state or on their areas, and that there is no reason not to approve the bill.

Denbo was one of nine who chose to approve the measure, against opposition that says that if they approve the slot machines then they will take money away from the French Lick Casino. Leaders in Orange County said that by allowing slot machines at Anderson and Shelbyville, they will be directly competing with the machines at the casino.

However, the bill passed the Ways and Means Committee and is moving on to the House for possible approval. The Orange County group says that there is no doubt that the casinos will negatively affect them, and they want the measure defeated in the House.

Jerry Fuhs, Chairman of the Historic Hotels Preservation Commission said that the slot machines will hurt what they have worked so hard to build. The HHPC is the group that worked with the Cook and Lauth Groups to get the French Lick Casino opened in the first place.
