New Casino Heats Up Competition

With the state of NY giving the go ahead with the new casino in Monticello, NY – many casinos are wondering how it will impact them. As the casino will have slot machines as well as table games, it is fairly safe to say that the Northeastern Pennsylvania Casinos are going to have the hardest time with it. They only offer slot machines, which means they are not really going to be on a level playing field with the new casino.

West Virginia is in the process of approving table games to join their existing slot machines, so they will at least stand a chance, that and they are not in the same vicinity as the new casino. They instead will be pulling their customers from Pennsylvania, who will end up being the most impacted from all sides.

The new casino will be built at the Monticello Raceway, which already has 1,500 slot machines. The new casino will add to that, and will have 3,500 slot machines, 125 table games, 24 poker tables, 12 restaurants, 6,000 sq ft of retail space, as well as a 3,000 entertainment venue for concerts and shows.

Pocono Downs says that it will impact them, but they think only minimally as they are on the fringe of their area. Mount Airy thinks they will be able to compete with the new casino because they already have a long standing tradition of bring a premiere resort. However, they all agree that the casino is not a done deal yet, so they aren’t going to start worrying now. The Mohawk Tribe still has a lot of hurdles to jump through, so they say that when and if they pass all the obstacles still ahead of them – then they’ll start worrying.
