Tracks Prepping for Slot Machines
Ever since the Indiana state legislature decided to allow slot
machines at their tracks, the horse tracks have been in overload mode
trying to get ready as fast as they can. Now that the tracks can have
slot machines, they aren’t wasting any time getting them in.
Both tracks, Indian Downs and Hoosier Park, have been approved for
slot machines, and now they have to figure out where to put them. They
have to start construction projects that will expand their current
facilities to allow room for the slot machines.
Indiana Downs has already submitted their request to the Indiana Horse
Racing Commission to expand their facilities. They are looking to
spend $300,000 on new stables at the Shelby County track.
They will each be allowed 2,000 slot machines under the new ruling, so
they will have to either construct separate facilities to house them
or they will have to expand what they have. Both say that they may
have to create temporary structures just so they can start generating
revenue from the slot machines.
The slot machine licenses as well as the construction costs are going
to be in the millions, in fact each track has to pay the state $250
million over the next two years. That just gives them the right to
have the slot machines, and does not include any monies that will need
to be spent on construction.
