Casino Rama Suspects Appear in Court

An international gambling scam that involved five people came to court yesterday. Those in court stand accused of using conspiracy, fraud, cheating, participating in a criminal organization, and laundering proceeds of crime against the Casino Rama. They took more than two million dollars from the casino.

Of the five that appeared in court yesterday, only one, John Tran of Windsor, could speak English, and none too well. He said he understood some of what they were being accused of, but none of the others did. Hai Dao Tran, Hai Van Tran, Khai Tran, and Thao Huynh, all stand accused of the same thing, and all are from Windsor. The court tried to find an interpreter for them, but was unable to. They return for bail hearings on Monday.

There were fifteen arrested, and four of those arrested were Casino Rama workers. They didn’t need to use electronic devices as many reported that they had, instead it was slight of hand, shuffling, etc. that they used according to Sgt. Bob Patterson. They focused on the mini-baccarat games, and since they had people on the inside it was much easier to rip off the casino.

Several US casinos, plus the one in Canada, were involved in the scam, with the group taking millions of dollars across the US. The casino wanted patrons to know that none of them were affected in any way, that only the casino was taken in the scam. They think they focused on the mini-baccarat because it was out with the other gambling games, where as baccarat has its own room.
