UK Government Supporting Addiction
Some people are attacking the UK government saying that they number of
slot machines and casinos that they are going to open will only add to
the problems that gambling addicts have in the country. Current
figures put gambling addiction very high in the country with three out
of four gambling every week.
Critics say that the passage of the Gambling Act will only cause these
numbers to increase, and that the country is currently gambling away
9.5 billion pounds every year. They say that children can gamble,
which sets them up for failure later on in life. They also say that
they are more likely to be hooked, as are young adult gamblers, than
those who are older.
They say that the government has already raised billions in taxes from
the gambling industry and any kind of further expansion would be
absurd and obscene. It will be easier to open betting shops, and most
of them will be in the poorer neighborhoods, which is where they get
most of their money. Critics say that they prey on the poor, and bleed
them dry of what little money they have.
Offering up the most concern is the increase in fixed odds betting
terminals which are springing up everywhere. The game lets punters
play casino games like roulette inside the bookies. They are one of
the worst for causing gambling addiction, as they make you feel like
you are winning almost every time. They say that not only are they
creating an army of addicts, the Gambling Act is making it even harder
for them to find help.
