Macau Bringing Even More Revenue
The Asian gambling center of Macau has long been touted as the next
Las Vegas, with reports putting them ahead of Vegas last year in slot
machine and gambling revenue. Now, according to the Chinese news
organization Xinhua, they have brought in 46.1% year on year for the
first six months of the year.
That works out to $4.75 billion just from the 26 casinos in Macau, and
just for the first six months of the year. The government’s Gaming
Inspection and Coordination Bureau showed that they were reporting
these figures for slot machines and gambling for the end of June.
The figures show that all kinds of betting have shown an increase over
the second quarter, including horse racing, greyhound racing, soccer
and basketball bets, and the lottery. Slot machine and casino gambling
accounted for more than 98% of the betting figures.
The slot machines or the “hungry tigers” as they call them, went up
76.3% in their revenue over the first six months. This more than made
up for the slight drop that some other areas had. Slot machines shares
also rose from 3.4% to 4.1% in the first six months over the first
half of 2006.
Baccarat did well for itself also, bringing in 85% of the gaming
industry’s total gross receipts in the first half of the year.
Roulette showed an increase as well, with a 66% share in the category.
The number of gaming tables and the number of slot machines have
increased as well.
