CT Reminds Residents That Gambling's Illegal

It seems that some Connecticut residents have gotten it into their heads that they want to organize public poker games, and thus the state thought it might take this opportunity to remind residents that they are not allowed to – that not only is it illegal to do so, but they would be competing with the deal the state made with Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

The State Division of Special Revenue says that they have been getting calls from people trying to do just that, but that poker is considered casino gambling and is illegal. They say that if you violate the terms of the law you will be looking at a Class B misdemeanor, as it is a prohibited form of gambling.

Not only is it illegal to offer gambling, but it is illegal to “solicit others” to play as well. They say that in addition to all of this, there are also the deals that they have made with the tribes, and a public organized poker game would compete with the tribal agreements that the state signed with them. They say that the tribes have legalized gambling, but that is all that is allowed.

They say that there are also those who gamble online, and they want to stress that online gambling is illegal in the state as well. They say that their job is to ensure the integrity of legalized gambling, educate the public about the dangers of gambling, and to ensure that that which has been authorized by law is safe and has regulatory provisions in place.
