Racetrack Has New Angle

Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center has a new angle to try and get residents to vote for the addition of table games to their existing slot machines. They are basically saying that if they change their minds later on, they can vote to get rid of the games. Not a bad angle, as this way people can vote for them now and think about them later.

What they are promising is that if they don’t hold up their end of the bargain, residents can tell them where to go in five years. They are promising a $250 million resort as well as 1,000 jobs – and they say that if they don’t come through, in five years the people of the state can reverse the outcome with a recall vote.

They are calling it “The Recall Guarantee” and many are already changing their votes. For many people who were on the fence about it, this makes a whole lot of sense to them. They basically get to eat their cake and have it too. They figure that they will make a lot of voters feel better about a yes vote if they can reverse it later on.

However, the West Virginia Family Foundation says that this is one more tactic by the tracks to get voters to vote for their table games. They say that if they were serious about a guarantee, why not just pull the games out in five years if they have not done what they said they would. They say that they are trying to “appease” voters and that since the track has not said that they wouldn’t oppose the vote in five years, the guarantee isn’t worth the paper it is written on.
