Just Say No to Slot Machines

At what point are too many slot machines too much? This is a question that some Indiana residents are asking themselves, as it seems every time they turn around – someone is trying to add more slot machines to the state. The French Lick casino has so many slot machines it seems almost impossible to find the rest of the games offered; and although a few might leave with more money than they brought in – they are far and few between as everyone knows that the slot machines are the biggest money makers for a casino.

At least with the French Lick casino, if you want to lose your money at the slot machines you have to work to get there. It isn’t an easily accessible location, and therefore you actually have to plan a trip to go play the slot machines. However, for all of those people who don’t go because it is so far away, the General Assembly is trying to help them out.

They are talking about legalizing slot machines at the state’s two tracks in Shelby and Madison counties, as well as Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park. This new House Bill 1441 would make it easier for people to play the slot machines because they will live a whole lot closer to them. House Bill 1401 would also allow slot machines at the two off track betting parlors in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, so that supposedly they will help the struggling horse industry.

What is important to keep in mind is that slot machines are highly addictive, and the closer that someone lives to a slot machine the more likely they will be to become addicted to it. Also, it only takes about a year to become addicted to the slot machines for someone who already has an addictive personality. Slot machines bring in 60-80% of profits for a casino, which means a whole lot of people are losing a whole lot of money.
