Residents Fight Slot Machines
Carey Leisure wants to open a slot machine shop in Huntingdon’s
historic market square, and residents are more than a little upset by
the idea. The adult amusement arcade has residents up in arms on how
to fight it from coming tin. The Huntingdon Town Center Partnership
and the Huntingdon and Godmanchester Civic Society both have opposed
the slot machine plan.
The slot machine application was submitted to the District Council by
the company who already has a slot machine arcade in St. Neots. The
owner of the company has already said that if his slot machine plan is
not approved he will be appealing the decision. He says that this is
for adults only, and that everyone will have to show id if they want
to play the slot machines.
The Chairman of the Huntingdon Town Centre Partnership echoed many
others’ feelings when he said that they were looking to bring in
businesses that would draw in families and bring more business to the
square. He said that a slot machine business should be put somewhere
else, somewhere where it won’t attract young people wanting to go in.
He thinks that the square just isn’t the right place to put slot
machines.
The secretary of the Huntingdon and Godmanchester Civic Society said
that he felt that they would be making a mistake putting slot machines
in there. He said that their group would be making a formal objection
to bringing in the slot machines.
