No More Slot Machines at Racetrack

The Birmingham Race Course closed down their adult arcade on Friday after an Alabama Supreme Court classified their gaming machines as slot machines. The owners took the case back to the court hoping that they would change their mind, but the court refused to review the ruling and maintained that they were slot machines and that they were illegal. So, not taking any chances, the slot machine parlor closed down.

Milton McGregor, owner of the slot machines and the racetrack, obviously felt it prudent to close down the arcade – his lawyer said that they did it out of “an abundance of caution.” McGregor plans to appeal the case to the US Supreme Court, as he felt that several justices were prejudiced against slot machines to start with. He said that there were justices that had campaigned against the legalization of slot machines, and that they should have recused themselves from the proceedings.

He said that the slot machines were supporting the track, and without that additional income he was going to have to lay some people off. The slot machine parlor would have supported those jobs, and the owner actually kept people working there even after all of this started. He was appealing the process keeping people on working there, even though – as one worker commented – there wasn’t anything for them to do.
