O’Malley’s Slot Machines Will Help a Lot
Martin O’Malley takes office January 17th, but he is already behind
schedule. The state is looking at huge budget deficits in the amount
of $6.6 by 2012 unless he comes up with a solution – like slot
machines or tax increases. Many think that if they had had the slot
machines in already they wouldn’t be looking at such dire
circumstances now.
Slot machine supporters believe that when the legislature was
approached with slot machine proposals earlier they should have
approved them, and they could have been generating income for them
this whole time. Senate President Thomas Miller said that he thought
they should have legalized the slot machines four years ago and that
they would actually be looking at a surplus of money by this point.
However, others such as House Speaker Michael Busch say that the slot
machines were not a viable option then, and he feels that they still
aren’t. He says that he is not alone in that opinion, that many within
the House are still opposed to legalizing slot machines. Miller agreed
that there might be better ways of raising the money other than
legalizing slot machines, but at this point the slot machines are one
of the fastest ways of bringing in much needed income. He thinks that
from a practical standpoint, there is no reason why they shouldn’t be
considering the legalization of the slot machines, especially since no
one seems to have a better plan just yet.
