Slot Machines Helping Lottery
Previously states that have brought in slot machines that already
allow a state lottery have found that the lottery suffers from the
slot machines. However, Pennsylvania has found the opposite is going
on – with the slot machines coming in, the lottery is actually up 8%.
They think it has to do with the way they structured the slot machine
agreements.
Every slot machine casino must carry lottery tickets – which make them
all that much more accessible to gamblers. The state looked at the
same period of time last year and compared it to this year, and lotto
sales were $631.2 million during the time of the slot machines, up
from last year when the slot machines hadn’t yet opened. Sales so far
for this year are already up 2% - $1.6 billion.
The lotto commission says that each week since the slot machines have
been open their sales have been up. They say that their two best weeks
of all time have been since November – when the first slot machine
casino opened. They are a little concerned that there are only two
slot machine casinos open at this time, and there are eight more
planning on opening by 2009 – but they don’t think that they will be
affected all that much. They think that the slot machines will take
some of their customers, but with sales going the way they are, they
don’t think they have to be all that concerned.
