Ledyard Slot Machine Lawsuit Continues

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe has been fighting the town of Ledyard, Connecticut for some time now. They believe that they are being taxed illegally over slot machines, and are looking to have the taxes reversed. They have been suing Ledyard over the slot machine taxes for a while, but it looks as though it may have just taken a larger step forward.

The tribe had chosen to originally sue the town for the slot machine tax along with their supplier – Atlantic City Coin and Slot Service, Co. However, they then removed them from the slot machine lawsuit on November 20th. The tribe is trying to say that they are a tax exempt entity and the slot machines cannot be taxed.

Ledyard insists that they are not taxing the tribe – they are taxing the supplier of the slot machines. They say that their beef is not with the tribe, it is with A.C. Coin and Slot. They think that the tribe is taking up a cause that is not really theirs, and that the slot machine company should be suing them instead.

The tribe says that any sort of tax that is levied on the slot machines will ultimately end up being levied on the tribe as the company will just pass those charges on to them. The town and the state are trying to dismiss the slot machine case, and that request is pending. The town thinks that the tribe dropped the slot machine company from the lawsuit as they are trying to stress the fact that this is an Indian issue, however by dropping them the town feels that they have no case at all now.
