Bars Want Slot Machines
Currently in Indiana, you have the right to go to a casino and play
the slot machines. There is a group, however, who would like to expand
that net just a bit to include slot machines at bars, taverns,
restaurants, and fraternal organizations. They say that the amount of
revenue that comes from the slot machines should be shared by all, not
just the casinos.
The Indiana Licenses Beverage Association did a study in 2003 that
said that if the above organizations were allowed to bring in slot
machines, there would be an additional $300 million brought in for
state and local governments. The idea has already caught on in the
state, especially in Northeastern Indiana. The amount of illegal slot
machines in that part of the state is huge, and many think that if
people are going to gamble anyway, it should be regulated and a
portion go towards helping the state.
Rep. Win Moses and Sen. Bob Meeks are supporting a bill to legalize
slot machines in the taverns, bars, etc. Moses is a Democrat from Fort
Wayne, and Meeks is a Republican from LaGrange. Meeks is also a former
state trooper – and has supported the legalization of slot machines
for many years. They both feel that the amount of illegal slot machine
gambling that has gone on has gone on long enough – and since they are
having a hard time keeping the slot machines out they might as well
legalize them and benefit from the revenue.
