Slot Machines Induce Labor

When you go to play the slot machines and you are hoping for a jackpot, most people think in terms of money. Not so for Nyree Thompson, who came to play the slot machines but left with an almost five pound baby boy. The woman, who was eight months pregnant, went into labor in the casino floor.

Thompson was playing the penny slot machines at Resorts Atlantic City casino Saturday morning, when she felt what she thought was gas pains. She went to the rest room, and when she came out she told a security guard that she was afraid that she might be going into labor. Before the guard had a chance to take her seriously, her water broke.

That guard, plus three others, assisted Thompson with the birth, wrapping the baby in a jacket while they awaited the paramedics. The baby came at roughly 9:30 am, the paramedics arrived at 9:40 am.

Steve Callender, VP of Operations at Resorts said that they have had people die in the casino, but they have never had a birth before. Thompson and her new baby boy, Qualeem, are reportedly doing fine.
