Kansas Considering Slot Machines
The people of Kansas have been fighting for years not to have slot
machines legalized in their state. There have been bills over the
years that people have tried to pass, but the people and the
legislature has been dead set against the legalization of slot
machines, and so far they have been very successful. That seems as
though it is about to change however, as there is a new social
climate.
With the new legislative session underway, one of the main concerns is
the renewal of the lottery bill. Many feel that it is important to
keep the state lottery because it does so much good for the state – it
is a real moneymaker for them. However, with some wanting slot
machines legalized there is talk of putting slot machines on the
lottery bill, and thus if you pass one – you pass them both.
The belief is that if you put the slot machines on the lottery bill
then it has to pass – but there is a chance that it won’t work. They
could end up with it not passing, and then the slot machines and the
lottery won’t pass and they will lose a huge chunk of revenue.
If the lottery/slot machine bill does not pass, then they would have
to go back to the drawing board and attempt to pass some other bills.
The slot machine proponents are trying to make it as palatable as
possible by taking part of the revenue from the machines and putting
it toward the state’s universities. This would help bring down the
cost of education so that more students could attend – and they think
this is a win-win situation. Only time will tell.
