Gamblers Can Get Studied for $100

The University of Nevada is trying to get participants from rural Nevada to participate in a study about problem gambling. They are willing to pay their participants $100 to let them ask them questions about their slot machine and gambling habits. One does not need to be an addict to qualify, it is simply for those who suspect that they might be heading down the road of a slot machine and gambling addict.

The International Gaming Institute is hoping to get 180 residents to sign up, and it would take several months to complete. They are targeting Pahrump and Tonopah, among other areas to get their subjects. They would be interviewed via telephone, and then if selected, they would be followed up on one month later, then three months later.

The study, a joint venture between UNLV and Harvard Medical School’s Division on Addictions, would give a clearer idea of the mind of a slot machine and gambling addict. Participants would be handled by trained specialists only. Las Vegas Valley residents can call a toll free gambling hot line to get help and the locations of Gamblers Anonymous meetings, but many of the smaller towns do not have this luxury.
