Cardiff Loses Slot Machine Bid

With Manchester winning the bid for the UK’s first supercasino, many towns were shocked that the underdog would win it. James Packer was one of those left scratching their heads – as his joint venture with Cardiff was thought to be one of the main contenders. Some thought that ultimately, the UK would end up giving out several supercasino licenses, and when they did not analysts were surprised.

The supercasino was wanted by many as it is expected to bring in almost three thousand jobs to whatever city got it – as well as revenue from the hotels, cinemas, etc. that are going to come with it. The decision is not permanent, as Parliament has to make the final decision. Once they make their decision – and many expect them to approve the Manchester decision – then it will be finalized.

Once the decision is finalized, then companies will start the bidding process to actually develop the casino in Manchester as well as the other sixteen venues that were awarded slot machine licenses. Some believe that there will be other supercasino licenses coming as well, but Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said that they have no intention of bringing in any more licenses until 2010 at the very earliest.
