WMS’ Slot Machines are Fighting Back
WMS was
considered one of the leaders in slot machine technology, right up
there with International Gaming Technology. However, in 2001,
everything they had worked for went rushing down the drain.
A patron of a
Detroit casino was walking around looking for a slot machine to play,
and noticed another slot machine player acting as if they were up to
something. When the player turned the other player in, the casino’s
managers discovered that the player was indeed cheating the slot
machine and thus the casino. It was discovered that not only was the
player cheating, but that there was a glitch in the software from WMS
that allowed gamblers to pile up credits on the slot machine that they
had not paid for.
WMS did
everything they could to fix the software problems at all of their
thousands of slot machines across the country, but it didn’t matter;
the credibility of the software and of the company was shot. After
spending two years creating a new operating system for the slot
machines, they then decided to get back into the business of marketing
their machines. The new “computerized guts” of their slot machines
debuted in 2003 and so far so good.
The slot machine
company has been profitable for the past two years, and their shares
have risen as well. They are also now a top performing slot
machine/gambling stock, something they have not seen in years.
