Texans Trying to Get Slot Machines

Texans are always claiming to do things in a big way, so why wouldn’t they want slot machines? This is a question that a group of Texans are trying to figure out, as they want to bring Las Vegas style slot machines to Texas. They think they have a pretty good shot at slot machines coming in as they tout numbers like $3.8 billion a year for the state, which could go for everything from tuition assistance to health insurance.

Texas has allowed gambling in the form of a state lottery since 1992, but legalizing slot machines would be a huge step for them. There are two separate proposals on the books for legalizing slot machines. One of them is to allow gambling with large Las Vegas type casinos in addition to slot machines at horse and dog tracks – plus casino gambling at Indian reservations. The other is a more limited form of gambling, which would only allow slot machines at the tracks, just to help them out from the gambling competition they are getting from neighboring states.

Both proposals would allow slot machines to bring in much needed revenue for the state’s two major needs: health insurance and tuition assistance. It is a sad fact that more and more students cannot afford to go to college once they graduate and one in four Texans do not have health care – slot machines could change that.
