Tables Joining Slot Machines

The Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre is considering adding card games like blackjack and Texas Hold ‘em to their existing slot machines. This would put the center one step closer to being an actual casino, and some are not sure how they feel about that. Provincial Treasurer Mitch Murphy says he is expecting some sort of a decision to be made over the next few weeks, but said, “We have nothing definitive at this stage, but I will say this, if you get out around the province there’s no secret lots of people are playing poker and table games in various establishments across the province.”

He went on to say that he didn’t see it as a big issue since it was already going on. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation, the company that operates the racino, has asked for the card games in addition to their 225 slot machines as they are still losing money and they are trying everything to save the track. They have only had the slot machines since the Spring, and many think that it is too early to introduce table games as well.

Those opposed say that they want to see what sort of impact a full fledged casino will have on the island, considering they are just getting used to the idea of the slot machines. They say that the government pledged to never allow casinos, and had said that the addition of the slot machines was just that and nothing else would be brought in. They say that if you allow the table games in addition to the slot machines you have a casino, nothing more, nothing less.
