No Problems for Slot Machines in BC

In British Columbia, it is well known that Surrey and Langley have more slot machine and gambling proponents than any other area of Canada. Because of the large number of slot machine gamblers, the government asked the Blue Thorn Research and Analysis Group to take a look at local residents and see what was going on. Since there seemed to be an increase in slot machine gambling, they thought they would be a good place to start looking for any problems. The study mostly focused on the socio-economic impact that slot machine gambling had on these two provinces.

Because of the opening of the slot machine casinos Langley Cascades, many felt that because of the lower income housing area near which it was located, there would be an increase in slot machine gambling addiction. However, they found this was not the case at all with the slot machine gambling addicts. In fact, they found that slot machine gambling addiction in Langley actually fell from 4% in 2004 to 2.6% in 2005.

There was also the opening of two gambling facilities in Vancouver and slot machines added to Fraser Downs racetrack. Because of these, they thought Surrey would see an increase in slot machine gambling addiction as well – and they did, but a very small amount. They showed a .4% increase in slot machine gambling addictions from 2004 to 2005. Since it is such a small amount of increase among slot machine addicts, no one feels there is any cause for great alarm.
