License Contenders
Appeals not withstanding, these are the breakdowns of who is going
where, and what they had to offer in their application for stand alone
slot machine licenses.
In Pittsburgh, the slot machine license winner is the Majestic Star
Casino. They are planning on opening the slot machine casino in March
2008 on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. The sole investor in the slot
machine casino, as far as paper goes, is Don H. Barden. Barden is a
slot machine casino developer out of Detroit, and this would be one of
five casinos for the group.
In Bethlehem, the slot machine license will go to Sands Bethworks
Casino. They are opening in mid-2008 with 3,000 slot machines on the
old Bethlehem Steel Corp. site. The slot machine casinos’ biggest
investor is Las Vegas Sands Corp, which is run by Sheldon Adelson. The
slot machine giant owns casinos in Macau, Singapore, and Las Vegas.
The Pocono Mountains’ slot machine license will go to Mount Airy
Resort & Casino. They will open with 2,500 slot machines in late 2007
at the former Mount Airy Lodge in Mount Pocono. Sole investor of the
slot machine casino is Louis DeNaples, who is one of the state’s
wealthiest businessmen.
Two slot machine licenses have been awarded in Philadelphia. The slot
machine licenses will go to Foxwoods Casino Philadelphia and
SugarHouse Casino. Foxwoods will open with 3,000 slot machines in late
2008 on the Delaware River. The slot machine casino’s biggest investor
is the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation who runs the Foxwoods Casino
Resort in Connecticut. SugarHouse Casino will open with 1,500 slot
machines in April 2008, increasing to 3,000 slot machines by November
2008. Biggest investor in the slot machine casino is Neil Bluhm, a
Chicago Based developer who owns and runs Casino Niagara in Canada.
