Macau Slot Machines Competing for Vegas
More than 100,000 Americans visited Macau last year, with most of them
coming over from Hong Kong. Much of this has to be attributed to the
boom in slot machines and gambling that is going on. There are also
more and more slot machine casinos seemingly opening every day. There
is craziness to Macau that seems reminiscent of an early Las Vegas,
and many think they can eclipse Vegas at this stage due to their slot
machine revenues alone.
Steve Wynn just opened a $1.2 billion resort in the country, which
makes it the 22nd slot machine casino to come to the area.
Gambling and slot machines are nothing new to the area, although it is
the only place in China that you can gamble legally. Stanley Ho had a
monopoly on slot machine casino licenses until 2002 when the
government started bringing people in to boost tourism by giving out
licenses as well. The Sands Macau now claims to be the world’s largest
casino, with 1,254 slot machines, and they have located it in Macau.
They are not alone, with slot machine casinos popping up everywhere.
The MGM Grand opens next year, and many more slot machine casinos are
still in the planning stages but they are coming. They already have
their land picked out; it would seem that Macau may not have the same
number of slot machines as Vegas, but they are coming up fast.
