Gettysburg Slot Machine Proposal

Each of the groups vying for a slot machine license will go before the Gaming Control Board this week to plead their case. On Wednesday it will be the Crossroads Gaming Resort and Spa, the group who would like to see slot machines put in near Gettysburg. The $300 million proposal is being met with much resistance, as many feel it is sacrilegious to put slot machines that close to a historic site.

The gaming board is hoping to award the slot machine licenses on December 20th, so they are taking the time to meet with the groups before they make their final decision. David LeVan is the leading force behind Crossroads, and they hope to win one of the two slot machine licenses. There are four other competitors also hoping for those slot machine licenses, two in the Poconos and two in Lehigh Valley.

There seems to be more people against the slot machine license going to the Gettysburg group than are for it. Those against the slot machines say that not only would it hurt the historical tourism industry, but it is also disrespectful to those soldiers who died there. The Crossroads group has been fighting an uphill battle since April 2005 – and they say that by bringing in the slot machines they would create jobs and tax revenue for the area.

The Crossroads group feels they have a real shot at getting the slot machine license. They think that the gaming board will bring up some tough questions that they will be prepared to answer, and in the end it will be they who go home with the slot machine license.
