Foxwoods Wants Philly Slot
Machines
The Mashantucket
Pequot Tribal Nation, the owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino, are
waiting to see who will be chosen for the two slot machine licenses
that are coming to Philadelphia. They have applied for one of the slot
machine licenses, and are now waiting to see if they have been chosen.
If so, they would spend more than $800 million to build a riverfront
slot machine casino in south Philly.
This would be
the first slot machine casino for the tribe that is not on the
reservation. They are up against some big names for the slot machine
license; names like Donald Trump and Planet Hollywood are also vying
for licenses.
“We're optimistic that we'll be one of the ones selected [for the
slot machine license],” said Foxwoods President John O'Brien. “We have
a good [slot machine] proposal. We have a good team, and we think we
have a lot to contribute to the community and the state. We're sort of
keeping our fingers crossed and see what occurs.”
The slot machine casino they have proposed would be near I-95 on a
parcel of vacant land. It would have 3,000 slot machines, as well as
restaurants and retail shops in the first phase. The second phase
would add 2,000 more slot machines as well as a hotel and spa. The
total for both phases of the slot machine casino and resort would be
$823 million.
The Mashantucket Pequots would have a 30% share in the slot machine
casino and would run it if they win the license.
