Economics Determine Slot Machines
The Texas Gaming
Association is trying to get slot machines expanded in the state of
Texas, and use the money to fund scholarships for high school seniors.
They are currently seeking a sponsor for their slot machine bill,
which if approved would open 12 resort style slot machine casinos in
Texas. The resorts would have to compete for the slot machine licenses
based on the economic impact they would have on their area.
Dallas and
Harris counties would both get two slot machine casinos, and Bexar,
Tarrant, and Travis counties as well as Galveston, and South Padre
Island would get one slot machine casino apiece. That would leave only
three slot machine licenses to be awarded, which would be determined
by the Texas Gaming Commission. The commission would be created to
oversee the slot machine casinos, the slot machines and gaming at the
Indian reservations, as well as the video lottery terminals – which
are basically slot machines – at the state’s existing horse and dog
tracks.
The slot machine
proposal would need voter approval as it is a constitutional
amendment, and if approved it would bring in $3.2 billion in tax
revenue just to the state. It would also bring in an additional $800
million to city and county governments. Roughly half of the slot
machine revenue would go to a college fund for every Texas high school
graduate who met minimum requirements – and the rest would go to the
state.
