D.C. Says No to
Slot Machines
Washington D.C.
seems like the perfect place to bring in slot machines. Lots of money
and politics just want to add to the allure of the slot machines.
However, this was not the case at all when they decided to try and
bring the slot machines to town.
The idea was to
put slot machines in the district’s poorest neighborhood to try and
raise money for the community – money that was very badly needed. They
thought that if they brought in slot machines to their neighborhood,
they might be able to afford better schooling and programs for the
elderly. The district thinks that the community is overreacting to the
slot machine issue, that they need the money and should take it where
they can get it. They don’t agree with the argument that in an area
already riddled with crime, if you bring in slot machines you are only
going to make it worse.
Opponents feel
that their government could not have gotten it more wrong if they
tried. They don’t want slot machines, and their board now knows it.
They say that no matter what they think the slot machines will do for
their neighborhood, the amount of crime and problems that they would
bring with them are not worth the price. They feel that their Board of
Elections and Ethics went about it underhandedly, and that they were
trying to exploit the community instead of helping it. They say that
even if they slot machines were able to help them initially, they
would end up paying for it in more ways than one later on.
