Let Plainville Decide on Slot Machines

The people of Middleboro will be meeting this week to talk about whether or not slot machines are a good idea. On Saturday, the residents will be having a town meeting to decide if they want the Mashpee Wamponoags to build a slot machine casino in their town.

Should they say yes, then it will go to the State Legislature, who will decide if slot machines can come in or not. If they say no, then the tribe will need to look elsewhere for their slot machines to go. But the beauty of it is that Middleboro’s residents will decide if they want slot machines or not, and Plainville is asking for the same consideration.

They say that if Middleboro votes no, or even if they vote yes, at some point their neighboring Plainridge Racecourse will be on the list of other sites for their slot machines. If Middleboro ends up agreeing to the slot machines, that track is going to be high on the list. Plainville simply asks that the people on Beacon Hill don’t decide for them if slot machines should come in or not.

They want their own vote to determine if they want slot machines in their town, and they say that they deserve the same consideration that the Middleboro people got when slot machines came to their neck of the woods. They know that if slot machines are voted down they will have more of a chance to have themselves be heard, but if slot machines are legalized, the legislature could make a blanket statement allowing slot machines all over the state, and then they would be at a loss to do anything about it.
