Republicans & Democrats Together?
US Senator
George Voinovich (R, Cleveland) and US Representative Ted Strickland
(D, Libson) have teamed up together to stop slot machines in Ohio. The
new Learn and Earn measure on the November ballot has gotten their
attention, and has gotten and republican and a democrat to work
together. The Learn and Earn slot machine initiative would bring
thousands of slot machines into horse-racing tracks, and allows two
new slot areas in Cuyahoga County. The money would be going to help
with college scholarships, but many in Ohio think the risk is not
worth the amount of money they would bring in.
The beauty of
the teaming is that election time is coming up, and there is a
Republican seeking the seat that Strickland covets. However, they have
both agreed that this is an entirely separate matter from the
election. They are both doing this non-partisan and are hoping to get
others to join in with them. The most important thing is to keep the
slot machines out of Ohio. There were many other Republicans and
Democrats at the event, as well as other political affiliations.
The only people
not finding the event and the pairing a good thing was the group Learn
and Earn. They released a statement claiming that basically the two
could get together all they wanted but that the only people who would
suffer were Ohioans – as they were the ones who would have to pay the
increased taxes for education with out the slot machines.
