Gambling Means New Jobs
Between Rhode Island and Connecticut, the amount of jobs that have
increased lately is staggering. Because of the expansion of their
gambling facilities, both states have increased the number of
construction jobs needed to fill the bill. However, the construction
workers aren’t the only ones seeking jobs – the new slot machines need
someone to watch them, as does the rest of the casino. They need to
hire many more people to work there than they had before as well,
which means good things to the people who live there – to the tune of
more than 500 new jobs.
Rhode
Island is trying to keep up with the influx of gamblers – they are
expanding Lincoln Park as well as Newport Grand – which is adding in
2101 slot machines and adding a hotel and restaurant. They have found
that gambling is up 10.6 percent from last year, which means big
business for the state. It has now become the state’s third largest
source of income.
The
income for the jobs varies, but there is an average of $30,000 a year
for most of the positions. Lincoln Park claims an average of $37,000
for their casino, but the workers aren’t buying it. They claim that
there is good money to be made, if you can get the hours. Most shifts
are shorter than regular shifts, so you have to work almost every day
of the week to try and get 40 hours. Then there is the training – if
you are picked to be a dealer you have to pass a math test, then you
go on to dealer school. If you are chosen for a job other than that,
however, you can go right to work as most of the other jobs are
similar to those found in most hotels and restaurants.
