Dover Downs Doubling
Delaware’s racinos are looking to start expanding, now that
Maryland and Pennsylvania have decided to start creating their own
slot machine parlors. Dover Downs is planning on doubling the hotel it
currently has and will add size as well as content. They are going to
be adding many more slot machines as well – and are looking at
spending somewhere around $52 million to do it. Harrington Raceway’s
Midway Slots is also going to be larger, with a price tag of roughly
$32 million to also gain size and slot machines. Both places are
hoping to hold on to the gamblers they already have as well as bring
in some new ones.
They will be adding
jobs to the area as well, roughly 150 new ones. The three racinos have
been planning their expansions ever since they heard about the new
competition they were going to be having. Now Maryland is looking to
possibly get in on the act as well. If they chose to legalize slot
machines, Delaware is in some serious trouble. They will have a tough
time keeping the slot machine players from staying in their own states
as opposed to coming across the line and spending their money there.
Delaware is so determined to keep the business that they actually went
in and changed one of their gambling laws to allows 4,000 slot
machines to each racino as well as the ability to stay open 24/7 every
day but Sunday.
Delaware’s
government wants to do everything it can to keep the business where it
is. They know that their current revenue is somewhere around $207
million. Their fear is of the possibility of how much they can lose,
and early estimates put their new revenues around $190 million
instead. That is a huge drop for the state, so they are going to keep
trying to keep their slot machines running.
