Confederated Tribes Good to Go

The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs got some good news this past week, their casino to be located in Cascade Locks, seems to be getting the go ahead for the tribe. Senator John McCain, (R - Arizona) is trying to get a bill passed that would not allow off-reservation casinos any longer, but it also allows for the projects that have already completed their paperwork to still be considered since they started before the resolution was introduced.

Two other representatives, Greg Walden (R- Oregon) and Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon) both supported the casino, but David Wu (D-Oregon) opposed it. Since it passed 27 to 9, the tribe feels that they have a real shot at getting their slot machine casino up and running. If McCain’s bill passes, off reservation slot machine casinos would not be allowed to be built any longer, but both the Warm Springs Tribe and the Klamath Tribe - who wants to build a casino in Aurora would be grandfathered in.

The new slot machine casino would be 500,000 square feet on 25 acres - located within the Port of Cascade Locks Industrial Park. There would be another 35 additional acres, which would be for parking. The Friends of the Columbia Gorge and he Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde were worried that by putting in another casino that it would enable plenty of other tribes to o the same. With the new HR4893, this will no longer be an issue.
