Backer of Broward Slots Pushing on

The pari-mutuals are just waiting for all of the confusion and dust to settle so that they can get on with their lives. They are dealing with the fact that the vote to allow slots in Broward County could conceivably be reversed. Opponents say that the signatures gained to get the measure on the ballot were gotten illegally, and that some of those who supposedly signed are actually already dead.

Dan Adkins, VP of Mardi Gras Racetrack and Gaming Center said that they have already spent more than $20 million on construction, and are “absolutely planning on going forward…We believe there's a constitutional amendment on the books. . . . We feel the voters have spoken.''

He is not alone, other pari-mutuals agree, and plan on continuing in the efforts to get ready for the slot machines. ''Our attorneys, I'm sure, will be looking into this matter,'' said the senior director of racing operations at Pompano Park, Steve Wolf. ``We've overcome every hurdle that's been thrown in our path, and just let the election results stand on their own. The people want to have the slot machines.'' They have already paid out more than $60 million to bring in the slot machines and are not turning back.
