Slot Machines Could Cost You

With gambling so prolific in Maine, critics have been concerned that gambling addiction would increase drastically. It seems that they are right, that for one woman what should have been a good time became a nightmare when he fun turned into gambling addiction and she lost everything.

One woman found that she has literally lost everything – her home, her pension, and possibly her mortgage. She is just one example of what can happen when you don’t play responsibly – and many people end up in the same predicament that she has. We’ll call her “Beth” and she has lost more than $100,000, and can’t stop gambling.

She is an educated, middle aged woman with a family who loves her; she is a professional, and should by all rights know better than to lose everything. However, this is just one example of what can happen – and that it can happen to anyone when they start playing the slot machines.

This week is Problem Gambling Awareness Week in Maine, according to Governor John Baldacci – and Beth’s story is just one that people have been listening to all week long. There are many Beth’s out there – people who had never gambled except for the occasional lottery ticket – and now they find themselves without any money, and without their self respect.
