Round One Goes to the Casinos
Philadelphia’s City Council was attempting to stop the casinos from
coming into their city. There are two casinos planned for the city,
one in Fishtown and the other in South Philly. They were putting an
anti-casino referendum on the May 15th ballot, when the Pennsylvania
Supreme Court issued an injunction against the city.
The Gaming Board has been fighting the city, and by winning this
round, they have angered many within the city itself. The residents
don’t want the casinos near schools, churches, etc, plus they find
that the places that the state has approved for the casinos are
already traffic snarled and the addition of more traffic would just
make them unbearable.
The court said very little except for the fact that they had sided
with the Gaming Control Board. They also said that they wanted lawyers
from both sides to get them their legal briefs by April 27th. This
seems that the court would be pushing to make a speedy decision before
May 15th.
Both sides feel that the injunction means that the residents and city
council of Philadelphia will not win in the end. They say that it is
government at work at its finest, and that the people’s voice has one
again not been heard or counted. Opponents say that it is obvious that
the state is just looking to make money, and that they don’t care
about their residents at all.
