Maryland Slots
The possibility of the addition of slot machines in Maryland has many
citizens concerned with the aftereffects of adding them. Proponents
say that not only does the horse racing industry need the slot
machines to survive, but so does the state. Opponents say that
legalizing slot machines would not only rob citizens of their hard
earned money, but that they will ultimately contribute to the demise
of the horse racing industry.
Proponents say that the Preakness will not be able to survive one more
year without slot machines. Opponents say that the Preakness is one
day of the year, and that slot machines will be taking resident’s
money 24/7 for the rest of the year. They also say that with the
advent of slot machines at other locations you saw a large jump in the
amount of gambling addicts, so the fact that they might lose Preakness
really is not a good enough reason to inundate residents with slot
machines.
Proponents also point out that local businesses will be helped by the
additional revenue that will come in from having more people come to
the slot machine locations. Opponents say that isn’t true and that
local businesses will see very little of the run off as most of their
money will be spent at the slot machines. They also say that casinos
give away free food, rooms, etc. in order to entice people to stay,
and that won’t help local businesses at all.
They also point out that the fact that the horses need slot machines
to survive is just lip service. They say that once the slot machines
come in people stop watching the horse racing, choosing instead to
spend their money gambling. They say that all the proponents want is
to bring in slot machines and they are using the horse racing as an
excuse to get them legalized. They contend that the worst thing
Maryland could do would be to add slot machines.
