Guam Trying for Slots, Again

After such a sounding defeat in November of last year, many thought they had heard the last of slot machine talk in Guam. Guam Greyhound had pulled out all of the stops last year to try and get slot machines legalized at the track. They also wanted to be able to exclusively offer the slot machines, making it impossible for other casinos to come in and compete with them.

However, the Tamuning facility was not successful in getting slot machines legalized, in fact Guam residents made it very clear that they would not stand for slot machines coming to the track. But it looks as though the racetrack’s owners may not have gotten the memo on how much they don’t want slot machines in Guam.

It turns out that they are trying again to legalize slot machines, and have gathered signatures on a petition to get the slot machine initiative on the ballot for November 2008. This will be their second shot at trying to get slot machines legalized, and many are surprised that they would try again so soon. The Guam Election Commission’s Board of Directors is meeting this Wednesday to discuss the petition, as they have verified all of the necessary signatures for their second attempt.

The last initiative failed, so perhaps they thought if they changed the name of the slot machine initiative that they might be able to get it passed this time. They are calling it “The Better Jobs for Guam Act,” and they are claiming that they will give portions of earnings to education and health care on the island.
