Slot Glossary A-D

 

Arm: The side “arm” on the slot machine is located on the right side of the slot machine and is usually a large lever with a ball on the end. The lever used to be used to trigger the slot machine, although quite often now it is just for show. In more recent slot machines you can use the arm or you can push a button – they both trigger the slot machine.

 

Australian Style Slots: Australian slot machines are usually referred to as “poker machines” or “pokies” and are officially called “gaming machines.” Their form of slot machines use video displays to simulate physical reels.

 

Bank: Traditionally a row of slot machines in a slot machine casino. 

Basic Machines: These are your basic slot machines without some of the fancier bells and whistles of the newer slot machines. 

Big Bertha: One of the first electromagnetic slot machines, it put the original slot machines out of business. 

Bonus: A slot machine bonus is when the symbols form a specific winning combination; a special screen is activated on the slot machine. The slot machine player then chooses an item that will then reveal what the credit amount is for that slot machine.

 

Bonus Video Slots:  The most graphically loaded glitziest slots to hit the market. The machines offer the chance to go to a second level bonus round. They have many options.  

Bonus Multiplier Slots: Slot machines that offer larger jackpots if you play more coins. The only way to win the top jackpot on these slot machines is to play the maximum number of coins. 

Bug: A device used on cheat slot machines, it is entered into the slot machines to prevent specific symbol combinations. 

Buy-a-Pay: Also known as Buy-Your-Pay, it is a specific type of slot machine that determines the symbol payout only after it knows how many coins have been played. Depending on the number of coins you play, the slot machine will do one cherry, two cherries, etc. 

Cage: the central depository for money, gaming chips, and paperwork necessary to support casino play; used to be very helpful in cashing out money to play slot machines. 

Caille Gum Vendor: Slot machine which was used in jurisdictions where slots were illegal, since it dispensed gum for every nickel played. 

Call Attendant: When someone hits a major jackpot, this is the person who comes and makes a “hand” payout. It also the person who oversees the operation of the machines.

 

Carousel: A grouping of slot machines that are usually of similar nature. Often the slot machines are in an oval or circular shape, which gives the slot machines the nickname “carousel.”

 

Certified: Any slot machine that has been examined by a casino regulator and determined to confirm to all slot machine laws and regulations. The slot machine must adhere to payout percentages that are previously determined for each slot machines; it will then be determined to be “Certified.” 

Charles Fey: The creator of the first slot machine that consisted of three spinning wheels and five symbols. The symbols on the slot machine were horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell. The last symbol is the one that gave the slot machine its name. He created a slot machine with an automatic payout mechanism in 1887. 

Change Person: Also referred to as a “slot machine attendant,” the person holding this position is responsible for exchanging cash for tokens or coins to be played in the slot machines.

 

Coin Hopper: This rotating container inside the slot machine holds all coins waiting to be paid out. When a player is ready to collect his slot machine winnings, they press a button on the front of the slot machine marked “cash out” and the hopper drops their winnings into a coin tray below the slot machines so that the player can collect them. The hopper also keeps track of the number of coins being held in the slot machine, and when that number gets too high the excess is put into a “drop bucket.”

 

Coin-In: The amount of money a player places in the slot machine.

 

Coin Size: Contrary to how it sounds, it does not have anything to do with the size of the coin being played in the slot machine. It is simply the amount of money being played in the slot machine – i.e. one coin, two coins, etc. 

Coins Per Spin: Also known as “coin size” it simply refers to the number of coins played at a time in a slot machine. 

Cold: Also referred to as a “tight slot” – it is a slot machine that does not pay out as much.

 

Comps: These are perks for high rollers, they can get free drinks, free rooms, cash rebates, you name it. Usually seen more in those on the tables, not so much in the slot machines unless you are in a slot machine club.

 

Countdown: Shows how close a slot machine player is coming to earning one slot machine club point. The number is displayed on an electronic card reader, and slot machine players keep track of their numbers by using their club cards each time they play the slot machines.  

Credit Meter: Shows the number of coins or credits in the slot machine. 

Double Machines: A boon to slot machine players, these slot machines will pay double or triple the winning combinations if you get specific symbols. 

Doubler: The term doubler is sometimes used in place of the term line doubler, a device that allows electronic signals to be displayed on the slot machine monitors.

Down Slot: See Up/Down Slot Cycle. 

Drop Through: Much like the slot machine game Pachinko, it involves balls that “drop through” to obtain a result on the slot machine. 

Driller: This is an illegal way of playing the slot machine; the slot machine player drills holes into the slot machine to induce a jackpot.

 

Drop Bucket: Can also be called “drop box” and means that it collects the excess coins that the coin hopper drops inside the slot machine. The bucket is located as the slot machine’s base and the casino regularly cleans out the slot machines to get the coins in the bucket. The only main difference between a “drop box” and a “drop bucket” is that the bucket is in lower denomination slot machines, and the box is in higher denomination slot machines. The box also has a lid and lock on it, whereas the bucket does not.
